The City of Waterloo is bringing shade to Waterloo Public Square, and they want your feedback on the design.
Working with a consultant team led by SHIFT Landscape Architecture, the city is conducting a feasibility study for the Laurel Greenway. They surveyed the public earlier this year to determine how they should bring shade to the square, and found that people preferred smaller-sized shade elements that could work in every season, and that they wanted natural materials to be used and an inclusion of trees.
Now, they are seeking public opinion on designs that were created with this feedback in mind. The proposed shade element resembles a large, towering leaf made of wood and steel, and would be scattered throughout the square to provide several shaded spaces.
They have also proposed to plant more trees for shade, and to have wood tops added to existing concrete seating to “soften” the space.
