This article is more than 5 years old.
I knew very little about Matt Mays before attending his show at Kitchener's Centre in the Square on Saturday night.
Born in Hamilton, but raised in Nova Scotia was about the extent of it.
It was even a fluke I was in the building. A few days ago a friend let me know he had an extra ticket and asked if I wanted to go.
Usually heading to a concert, I know a lot about the band and the music.
That was not the case this time around.
But in the end, it will go down as one of the best concerts I have ever been to.
Mays opened with “Howl at the Night”, sitting alone at the piano.
What I also thought was a great touch, with each song he would welcome a member of the band to stage, until all eight were out there.
Like my friend Ryan said to me after the show, “They didn't view it as a job. They looked like they were having fun!”
And the audience picked up on that vibe.
The tempo would amp up with each song, until we were all on our feet and there would be no sitting back down.
Maybe not a household name yet, but Mays' popularity will only grow the more shows he does, like the one I witnessed on Saturday.
His “Howl at the Night” tour wraps up next week with a pair of shows in New Brunswick and two in Halifax.
Below is one of my favourite songs “Cocaine Cowgirl”:
