Kitchener-Waterloo Film Festival kicks off

By Evan Taylor

Tired of seeing the same old formulaic blockbusters? This weekend smaller independent films will take the screen at the first ever Kitchener-Waterloo Film Festival for a different cinematic experience.

The festival will be a mix of short and feature films. It also will have a nice blend of local and international films on showcase.

Dan McLeod, festival director, spoke to 570 News about the makeup of the festival.

“It's a 33/33/33 split we have a third international, a third national and a third being local films.”

One of the films he's most excited for is a documentary which screens Saturday night about a local architect called Finding John Lingwood.

Lingwood designed some iconic buildings like the Carmel New Church and more than 700 other building in the region.

The director of that film Dwight Storring spoke about his inspiration for the film.

“I like to tell stories of people who build or impact their community and Lingwood has certainly done that, the story is told through his impact from stories from his friends and family.”

The festival is being hosted at the two Princess Cinema locations with most of it taking place at the Twin.

Tickets can still be found online for all three nights of the festival which concludes Sunday night with the screening of a 1965 Italian sci-fi horror film.
