Heat wave likely contributor to increased overdoses in Region

The recent heat wave is being partially blamed for an increase in suspected drug overdose and drug poisonings in the Region.

Region of Waterloo Public Health (ROW Public Health) has issued a Community Drug Alert after 44 suspected overdoses or poisonings and one suspected drug related death between June 28 and July 2.

According to ROW Public Health, drug users are at increased risk of overdose or death during periods of extreme heat.

The body can react in unexpected ways when it’s hot out. It could lead to overheating, dehydration or other complications.

Another factor leading the increase is the highly toxic drug supply in the Region.

Recent testing through the Sanguen Health Centre’s Drug Checking Program, showed stronger than expected Fentanyl that has been mixed with high amounts of other opioids or non-opioids.

ROW Public Health is encouraging drug users to always carry naloxone and to carry extra during hot weather. They also encourage using the Region’s many cooling centres to get out of the heat.
