Cambridge Centre now preferred site for proposed multiplex arena

In a special meeting, Cambridge City Council unanimously approved a motion to move forward with the Cambridge Centre as the preferred site of a new multiplex arena.

For now, the mall would likely include two new ice rinks, a gym and running track, but discussion is still ongoing as to whether or not a 50 metre pool could be included.

Mayor Doug Craig says a big question mark when it comes to the aquatic centre is a possible partner.

“What we are looking for is a 50 metre pool, but we are also looking for a partner. If we can secure that then we will be able to answer the issues in the aquatics community with regards to the fact that what we have is inadequate for competition. I think it will make them quite satisfied with us.”

Craig adds the decision to go with the Cambridge Centre as the preferred location was an easy one.

“Well the preferred site of the Cambridge Centre is mainly because it is centrally located and it gives us an opportunity with the space they have there to be able to build a major complex.”

While the mall already includes one rink, the exit of Sears provides space for a number of different facilities.

Craig says the city is already looking into what the new multiplex could look like.

“We are looking at least two rinks, we are looking at gyms, we are looking at walking tracks. Those are all the major components of the new multiplex, plus there is already a rink there.”

The decision means the city will no longer be considering Conestoga College as a possible location.

After approving the motion to move forward with the Cambridge Centre, council subsequently voted to scrap its memorandum of understanding with the college.

Council will meet again in early 2018 to discuss possible locations when it comes to the aquatic portion of the multiplex.
