Police in Guelph are looking to identify a handful of people after unruly and dangerous behaviour led to injuries and charges during the University of Guelph’s homecoming celebrations.
On Sept. 26, officers responded to numerous reports of objects thrown into crowds, individuals climbing buildings, as well as shoplifting and vandalism at nearby businesses during the unsanctioned Guelph Homecoming street parties, primarily located around Chancellors Way.
“Homecoming is an opportunity to celebrate, but dangerous and unlawful behaviour cannot be dismissed as people simply having fun,” said Deputy Chief Steve Gill.
“Throwing objects into crowds, climbing buildings and damaging property can cause serious harm. Those who put others at risk must be held accountable.”
Police then posted a number of photos of individuals they wanted to speak with in connection with the out-of-control party.
As of Thursday afternoon, five of the individuals were identified, and several additional photos were released.
Police encouraged individuals who required medical treatment due to injuries sustained during Guelph’s homecoming to report them to police.
Anyone who had property damaged during the event is also asked to come forward.
Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie said aside from the obvious dangers, he is fed-up with the costs associated with the annual event.
Depending on the year, he said he has seen the city dinged with bills ranging from $10,000 to upwards of $100,000.
