A man wanted for second degree murder in connection to the death of his Kitchener girlfriend is now coming home to answer to the crime.
This comes after a judge in Texas approved the request to extradite Ager Hasan back to Canada on Wednesday.
Hasan has been in custody in San Antonio for months, after he was arrested by U.S. Secret Service in July in connection to a counterfeit investigation.
Hasan fled to the U.S. back in April, the same day his 22-year-old girlfriend Melinda Vasilije was found dead inside of her Kitchener apartment.
The Texas judge has now approved Hasan’s extradition, while simultaneously denying his request for bail.
Inspector Michael Haffner with Regional Police says Hasan will remain in custody in Texas until they can go pick him up.
“We will be sending two of our local officers to San Antonio to take control of, and bring Hasan back to Ontario, where he will be arrested and face charges including second degree murder.”
Haffner says they’re currently waiting for the appropriate paperwork to be filed with the Attorney General and U.S. Department of Justice, and that the extradition process could take upwards of 60 days.
“With the assistance of our local crown’s office along with the Ministry of the Attorney General, and needing to make the proper arrangements for our own officers to head down to Texas, it is still quite a lengthy process. Also, it’s dependent on potential appeals by Mr. Hasan.”
Haffner adds that once Hasan returns to Ontario, he still has to go through our courts, as he is innocent until proven guilty.
There is currently no official date set for his extradition.
