Kitchener father caught driving over 100 km/h in a school zone

A local father has been charged after he was caught speeding while taking his two children to school.

Staff Sgt. Mike Hinsperger says it happened Friday morning in Kitchener.

“One of our officers was in the area doing speed enforcement, and around 9:15 a.m. clocked a vehicle on the south-end of Victoria Street travelling 107 km/h in a 50 zone through the school area. Due to the extreme speed, stunt driving charges were laid– the vehicle was impounded and his driver’s licence was suspended for seven days.”

Hinsperger adds that the man had his two children in the back of his vehicle, and speed wasn’t the only dangerous factor this morning.

“This was definitely an unique scenario. We don’t see these types of speeds often at all. Also this morning, it was blowing snow outside. The weather and road conditions also added to the seriousnesses of this– and that’s why the driver was charged with careless driving, stunt driving and speeding.”

Hinsperger also reminds us of the importance of obeying posted speed limits, especially in school zones.

“We’re reminding drivers to be specifically careful when driving through school zones– and this is something we try to encourage year-round. Our kids are our most valuable commodity so school zones are something that we focus on enforcing as Police, and remind drivers to slow down and mind the speed zones.”
