Police concerned after rash of bike thefts in Guelph

Guelph Police say 2016 was another problematic year for bicycle thefts in the royal city.

Constable Mike Gatto says the number of bicycle thefts in Guelph has nearly doubled in recent years.

“This year is fairly comparable to 2015– in that year we had around 450 bicycle thefts in the city. That number was quite large as compared to years past– which are usually around the 200-300 range. This year we’re already looking like we’ll be around the 400 range for bicycle thefts again.”

Gatto says these bike thieves are targeting various locations throughout the city.

“If a bike is there, these thieves will find a way to get it. They don’t care if it’s on your property, your shed, your backyard, your garage, the foyer of your house– we’re getting bikes stolen from all of these locations across the city.”

Gatto adds that these bikes are a hot commodity for thieves due to one particular factor.

“Generally, these thefts seem to be related to the drug trade in our city. Unfortunately these bikes are being stolen and then being sold for drug money in most cases, a lot of these bikes are being sold outside of the city or just being broken down and sold as parts.”

Gatto also urges all cyclists to do their best to secure their bicycle at all times.

“All you can do is make sure that the taking of your bike is an inconvenient for these thieves as you can. That means having a very heavy-duty lock that can’t be cut easily as these thieves are going around town with the tools to do so. Spend the extra money and get a good solid lock. Also if you can, keep your bikes indoors and keep your doors locked.”
