Rusted old cruise ship finally removed from slough in Selkirk, Manitoba

SELKIRK, Man. – The rusted, rotting remains of an abandoned old cruise ship that used to offer posh excursions on the Red River has finally been dismantled after spending the last 25 years parked in a slough.
The owners of the MS Lord Selkirk II — who later went bankrupt — simply abandoned it, leaving the province and City of Selkirk to split the $400,000 cost of removing it.
This week, council met with officials from SaskSteel to thank them for their work.
Mayor Larry Johannson says it was money well spent to get rid of a huge eyesore, a pollutant and a danger to the community.
The ship was built in Selkirk in 1969 and was 53 metres long.
In its heyday, it could take 130 passengers and 40 crew members up and down the Red River and around Lake Winnipeg on multi-day excursions.
