Regional Police are conducting a child pornography investigation at a Kitchener elementary school – after photos of naked students were sent to other students on social media sites via mobile phones. Staff Sergeant Mike Haffner tells us that some of the students bullied other students by threatening to extort them. Haffner tells the paper the students were mostly in grade 7 and 8 and there were younger students and it involved more than one school. The schools in question have not been named.

The Supreme Court of Canada has dealt a major setback to the Harper government’s tough on crime agenda. By a vote of 6-3, it has ruled the law requiring mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes is unconstitutional. Today’s ruling upholds a 2013 Ontario Court of Appeal ruling that labelled the law cruel and unusual punishment.
