Lil Premsukh, Manager, School of Business & Hospitality – Continuing Education, Doon Campus, Conestoga College
John, Target employee
Do you think 16 weeks’ severance pay is enough for employees? Was the writing on the wall? What should Target have done differently? What would have enticed you to shop there more regularly? #bringbackzellers
Target is pulling all 133 of its stores out of Canada, meaning over 17,600 employees country-wide will be out of work. Locally, about 400 people will be out of work. The company is asking courts to set up a $70 million dollar fund to ensure all current employees get at least 16 weeks’ severance pay. The decision to close shop in Canada will cost the U-S parent company between $500 and $600 million dollars. Manager at the School of Business and Hospitality, Lil Premsukh has details on how this could affect current employees and what this will do to the U-S company.
11:30 – Tipping – Restaurants
Candace Cobbing, server, Village Family Restaurant, Guelph
Thanks to technical producer Kat Drake for bringing this story to our attention…via a College Humour video. Comedian Adam Conover says ‘tipping sucks’ – and that it should be banned. He asks ‘Why is it our responsibility to pay the restaurant’s employees humanely?’ He says it makes the end of the meal awkward – forces you to do math – and makes us feel obligated to tip, even when the service isn’t that good. Currently, servers in Ontario make 9.55 an hour – the general minimum wage is 11.
