Public health inspectors visited a record number of local restaurants last year to ensure compliance with food safety practices. A total of 5,230 inspections of food premises and 762 re-inspections were completed in 2013 across Waterloo Region. The number of routine food safety inspections has been rising steadily since 2005, when there were 3,193 inspections. In 2012, there were 5,088. While there were more infractions found, that increase was not unexpected with more inspections done, and the average number of infractions per inspection remained consistent with previous years. In 2013, there were 3,162 critical infractions and 7,822 non-critical infractions noted in the 2,428 inspected food premises.
