If you haven’t provided the Region’s public health unit with your child’s immunization records — they could be off of school for up to 20 days.
Manager of Vaccine Preventable Diseases Linda Black tells 570 News 654 suspension notices were handed out this year, and take effect Tuesday, May 7.
She says they do get a few upset parents wondering why such an extreme measure is taken.
“Ultimately our goal is not to suspend any kids,” she says. “We try really hard to give plenty of notice.”
She says the initial request for the updated records go out in September, with a reminder six weeks before the suspension notices take effect.
Black says the suspension is the third and final step.
But she says phones are ringing off the hook, and the number of suspensions will drop dramatically to about 200 by the end of the day.
Black encourages parents to get in touch because she says the health unit understands there can be extenuating circumstances and they want to work around that to get everyone protected from these diseases.
