A special council meeting at Kitchener City Hall has cancelled square2square events for the rest of the year.
Council opposed staff recommendation to have one more car-free Sunday event on September 18th to the tune of 3 in favour and 6 opposed.
A second motion, brought forward by Councillor Kelly Galloway, scrapped all further 2011 square to square events was passed, with 8 in favour and 1 opposed.
Galloway tells 570 News this motion comes partially because of the budget, “we don’t have the funds in the budget and it gives us the opportunity to strategically think about this kind of an event for the city and really moving forward it will help us make sure that we’re successful, we need to brand it properly, we need to think strategically about it”.
Galloway’s motion also asks staff to “go back to the drawing board and come back with some options of what we can do with King Street” and that is also “brings it back to our budget process for 2012.”
Councillor Dan Glenn-Graham was the only councillor to oppose Galloway’s motion. He tells 570 News he was opposed because it stipulates no further 2011 car-free Sunday type events, “I’m hopeful that we can still do something if we can show that it’s revenue neutral, because the Police and road barricades will be out, that we can just leverage that as an asset and just have people pour onto the streets and do something cool. Either Oktoberfest Parade or that run the weekend after that. Glenn-Graham adds that he is willing to bring forward these ideas in a separate motion.
