Public health confirms human case of West Nile virus in Waterloo Region

By Erin Anderson

Public health has confirmed a human case of West Nile virus in Waterloo Region.

Details on the infected individual have not been released but it’s the first human case in Waterloo Region in 2026.

Region of Waterloo Public Health says last year, there were three local human cases reported.

The new human case comes a little over a month after a mosquito trap in Kitchener tested positive for the virus.

Associate Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Rabia Bana, says the risks will ease with the arrival of the first frost of the season.

“Despite recent cooler fall weather, we have not yet reached the temperature to halt mosquito activity,” Dr. Bana said in a release. “Take precautions while spending time outdoors and remove any standing water on your property to help reduce mosquito breeding.”

Health officials say most people who get infected with West Nile virus do not show any symptoms, however, some may experience effects like mild fever, headache and muscle aches, stiff neck, swollen glands, and a skin rash.

Anyone exhibiting symptoms after being bitten by a mosquito should seek medical attention.
