RIM hosting “BB7FanNight”

Research In Motion (TSX:RIM) says it is holding a social media event tonight to promote upcoming BlackBerry devices, as the company contends with an increasingly competitive smartphone market and undertakes severe cost-cutting measures.

The Waterloo, Ont.-based company teased followers of its official Twitter feed with an invitation to what it has dubbed “BB7FanNight.”

The company says it will provide fans some details on the previously announced BlackBerry devices, which use its updated operating system BlackBerry 7.

The expected announcement comes a day after RIM said it would cut 2,000 jobs, or about 11 per cent of its global workforce, to reduce costs amid a competitive smartphone and tablet market.

RIM stock has been hammered in recent months and is hovering near a 52-week low, and though the company has remained profitable it has received harsh criticism from some analysts and investors.
