Widening Weber

The Region’s Planning and Works committee has approved a preliminary plan to widen part of Weber Street and that has some residents concerned about all the potential construction slated to happen in the same area at the same time.
Peter Lynn is the Senior Project Manager of Transportation and Environmental services with the Region of Waterloo, he tells 570’s Jeff Allan as per the budget, construction will begin in 2015. It will likely be a two year project, hopefully wrapping up at the end of 2016.
Lynn says Weber and Water, and Victoria and Weber are difficult intersections that will be dealt with in the construction project. he says they will have to straighten out Weber to alleviate the odd angle those two intersections are on.
He said it’s too early to tell what is going to happen to the properties located along Weber. Unfortunately, the widening requires that most properties on the west side of Weber north of Victoria are going to have to be acquired and demolished.
According to Lynn, part of the widening plan means lowering Weber to get under the railway tracks, and that means access to Briethaupt would be blocked.
When he was discussing the project at a planning and works committee earlier this week, Lynn says there were concerns about all the construction projects on the go for that area all happening at the same time. He admits it is going to be a real problem trying to co-ordinate all of the road work going on in this area, but they will try their best to make it work.
Lynn says the environment assessment is basically done at this point, so the big ticket items remaining include property acquisition and detailed designs.
