Research in Motion: Then and Now

In April of 2011, Research in Motion released the latest jewel in their crown of technology – the PlayBook.

In anticipation of that release, coupled with the obvious connection between the BlackBerry manufacturer and Waterloo Region (where they are based), Paul Johnson of 570 News produced a 5-part series looking at the company, its industry leading products and it’s relationship with the local community.

Utilizing the knowledge of tech experts like Carmy Levy and Sasha Seagan of PCmag.com along with authors who had intimate and detailed information on the creation of the company like Rod McQueen (“BlackBerry”) and Alastair Sweeny (“BlackBerry Planet”), we were able to produce a far-reaching and in-depth look at the tech giant’s past, present and future.

Part One – To open the series we looked at the buzz being generated by the tech giant’s newest release – the PlayBook.

Part Two – Next up, we went back in time to the beginning.  We analyzed where the company got its start and why it happened in Waterloo Region.

Part Three – Research in Motion has offices scattered all over the world but their home base continues to be on Phillip Street in Waterloo, Ontario.  In the 3rd installment of the series we focused on the significant impact of that decision and what it has meant for the area as a whole.

Part Four – Thanks to innovators like RIM – the world has become a very small place, but they are not alone. In the fourth chapter of the series we looked at RIM’s direct competition and the ongoing race to be the best.

Part Five – In the 5th and final segment of the series we looked at what the future may hold for the local tech giant.  For the most part our experts believed that it would be more of the same for the company – however, the ride has been far from smooth since the PlayBook’s release.
