LRT meets resistance

Waterloo’s incoming new city council may be set to deliver a major blow to supporters of a proposed Light Rail Transit system in the region.
They held an orientation meeting last night and this morning’s Record reports at least two councilors suggested they may vote to withdraw the city’s support for a train system.
They said the response they got from city voters during the election campaign was overwhelmingly against LRT.
City council will not be sworn in until December, so they will not make a decision on transit until that time, at the earliest.
On another front, the new council also said it plans to do as expected and follow the wishes of city residents and reject merger discussions with Kitchener.
As for water fluoridation, which city residents also rejected during the election, the city will leave that matter up to regional council.
