Debating LRT in Waterloo

It was anything but a ringing endorsement for Light Rail Transit from the candidates running for mayor of Waterloo.
They squared off in a debate heard last night on 570 News and Rogers TV.
None of the four vying for the city’s top job gave unconditional support to the proposed use of trains in the region.
Brenda Halloran said what she’s hearing from residents is they don’t support it and neither does she.
Jan d’Ailly said it’s time to take a step back and make sure it is right.
He supports some form of rapid transit but can not back LRT at this stage.
Franklin Ramsoomair said Waterloo needs to get its fiscal house in order first before spending money on light rail, adding we can put it off for now.
Dale Ross said he is not a supporter of LRT as it is currently designed and doesn’t think we can afford it at this time.
On another front, all four candidates also said they are not in support of proceeding with merger talks with Kitchener.
