Contract – aisle 2

Local Loblaw stores will stay open, now that their workers have averted a strike.

About 10 thousand workers across the province voted 74 per cent in favour of a new five-year agreement.

The contract covers a few thousand staff at 15 Loblaw stores in Waterloo Region and Guelph.

Scott Penner is the head of UFCW Canada Local 1977.

He tells 570 News the contract provides protection and includes wage increases for all groups, as well as improvements in vacation and health care benefits for part-time workers.

Penner says in the event that a Zehrs store is converted to the Great Food banner, union members have the option of maintaining their rate of pay or Christmas bonuses.

It took more than five months of talks to reach the agreement.

Penner says this was one of the most difficult rounds of negotiations he’s ever been involved in.
