The Premier and five Federal Cabinet Ministers on hand Sunday for what was Professor Stephen Hawking’s only scheduled public appearance during his stay in Waterloo. It was Hawking’s official welcome to Canada — and it happened at the Perimiter Institute.
His scientific career spans over forty years — so it’s difficult to pack into a one hour presentation about your own life — but Hawking did — sometimes bringing a packed house to laughter… Perimeter Institute founder and Board Chair Mike Lazaridis was beaming following Hawking’s presentation in the theatre that bares his name.
In his public address to a packed crowd, Professor Hawking recounted his research but also delivered the personal story of his life and times — detailing in some tales — competitive atmosphere between scientific theories and the minds who pushed them.
This past October, an expansion to the Perimeter Institute was named in Hawking’s honour. He’s spent the past six weeks privately working on scientific research activities.
During opening remarks, Hawking was officially welcomed to Canada by Industry Minister Tony Clement and Premier Dalton McGuinty. Hawking’s stay will continue into next month — conducting private, scientific research activities at Perimeter.
