Wait times report

A report card released today by an advocacy group suggests there are troubling wait time hot spots in five priority areas identified by government.
Those areas include hip and knee surgery, cataract surgery, heart surgery, diagnostic imaging and cancer care.
The Wait Time Alliance also says that outside the priority areas, nearly half of all patients are waiting longer to be treated than is medically acceptable.
The group’s fifth report card looked at pediatric surgery for the first time. It found that more than 17,000 children waited longer for surgery than medical experts recommended in 2009.
The provincial and federal governments committed $5.5 billion dollars in 2004 to address wait times.
The head of the WTA says governments must work harder to eliminate unnecessary waits for all types of medical care.
