We’re being encouraged to take 20 minutes to make the community a cleaner place today. The annual “20 Minute Makeover” is this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. and area businesses, schools and other organizations — including community groups and private citizens — are encouraged to get outside and help clean up their neighbourhood.
Every city in the region supports the initiative and more than 3000 people are expected to take part in Cambridge alone. Environmental planner Paul Willms says a number of community organizations have climbed aboard for this year’s event, including the Ancient Mariners, who are doing a “canoe clean-up” to collect debris along the Grand River. Willms tells 570 News the event has grown exponentially over the years, from about 300 people taking part five years ago to the consistent 3000 that have come out recently. Willms say he’d like to see Cambridge reach 4000 participants this year.
Commissioner of Planning Services, Janet Babcock, says Cambridge practices what it’s preaching as virtually every department within the city gets involved in the makeover. That includes city councillors, whom Babcock says will spend time in their own wards where there are other groups working.
