Waterloo votes no on merger question

Waterloo city council has voted no to opening possible merger discussions with Kitchener.

The motion was defeated in a recorded vote.

If it had passed, Waterloo residents would have been able to voice their opinion during the October municipal election on whether their council should open amalgamation discussions.

Councillors heard from 13 delegations alone on the matter Monday night, many voicing their opposition to having the question placed on their ballot.

Councillor Jan d’Ailly, who’s running for mayor in the October election, suggested the formation of a task force in the future represented equally by the 2 cities to look at amalgamation.
