Bylaw changes proposed in Cambridge

More than 90 new bylaw penalties are being considered in Cambridge. Not only are fines for many infractions higher than in the past but bylaw officers will be given the power to issue tickets on the spot, rather than take a case to court and leave it to a judge to set a penalty.

Among the 91 bylaws being deliberated today: a $110 fine for snapping a wedding picture, flying a model plane, or holding a picnic with more than 15 people in a city park. Fines could get as high as $125 for leaving a broken down car parked for more than 48 hours and the penalty for breaking the outdoor vending bylaw can range up to $295. The proposed bylaws are meant to keep properties in check, derelict cars in their place, and ensure the proper use of city-owned lands.

A staff report says changes to the city’s fees and fines could add more than $8600 to revenues in Cambridge. City council is again spending the day poring over its 2010 budget with a tax increase right now that sits at 3.77%.
