Canada will send 1,000 additional soldiers to Haiti

The Canadian government says it will send an additional 1,000 soldiers to Haiti.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay says the troops will be involved in peacekeeping and reconstruction. The soldiers, from Canadian Forces Base Valcartier, were put on standby Friday.

The soldiers will bring along engineering units, as well as headquarters and support elements and 60 vehicles. They’ll join roughly 200 military personnel already on the ground in Haiti helping the earthquake shattered country.

Two Canadian warships are steaming toward Haiti and could be on station as early as Monday.
