570 News has learned a nurse from Elmira has died in the Haiti earthquake.
Yvonne Martin was one of seven people who arrived in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday afternoon.
Martin was a member of the Waterloo Mennonite Brethren Church.
She worked at the medical clinic in Elmira for 36 years.
Dr. Michael Norris worked with Martin and says she enjoyed people and was dedicated to her profession.
Martin’s group arrived about 90 minutes before the earthquake hit and had just settled into a guest house when the ground began to tremble and the shelter collapsed.
Kitchener-Conestoga M-P Harold Albrecht issued a statement saying his thoughts and prayers are with the Martin family.
He tells 570 News the federal government will work with the family to help bring Yvonne back to Canada.
