Masking once again to be optional at University of Waterloo

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The University of Waterloo has announced that masking is optional for the winter term.

The rule change goes into effect on January 9 when the term begins.

In a statement, the school added that masks are still highly recommended in indoor settings.

UW did not begin the fall semester with a mask mandate, but introduced one on November 9 for any academic activity that took place indoors.

The university said that although respiratory illnesses are continuing to spread, they present less of a risk now to disturbing lectures, and seminars.

As well, UW said it will bring back a mask requirement if necessary at any point during the winter term.
