The executive director of the Coalition of Muslim Women of K-W is on the path to recovery, according to an update from her family.

Fauzia Mazhar was involved in an ATV crash in Dubai, where she suffered life-threatening injuries.

Her family says she successfully underwent a spinal operation on Tuesday and may be woken up from sedation on Wednesday.

“It will be the first time the family will be able to talk to her since the accident last Tuesday. This is the very first step in her recovery journey,” said Aisha Syed, the organizer of the GoFundMe page in support of Mazhar.

Nearly $80,000 has been raised to cover medical and rehabilitation expenses in five days.

Mazhar is expected to be to be moved back to Canada to receive long-term care.

“She will need the continued support from all of use to regain her strength and back to her favorite thing in the world i.e. community and social work,” wrote Syed.

Mazhar is a well-known community leader who's advocated against Islamophobia, racism, hate, and discrimination.
