By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Cambridge Memorial Hospital will open its new patient care wing on January 18, 2020.

The hospital officially took possession of the wing on Wednesday.

The next ten weeks will be used to train and get almost 2,000 staff, physicians, midwives and volunteers oriented with the new wing.

Over 80 vendors also have to install and test clinical equipment before patient care can begin.

“Today marks the beginning of a new healthcare chapter in Cambridge and North Dumfries,” Patrick Gaskin, president and CEO of CMH, said in a release.

The Emergency Department will be the first program to open its doors to patients in the new wing.

Following that, Intensive Care, Medicine A, Birthing, Women and Children and Mental Health programs will transfer their patients over that same weekend.

It's anticipated the state-of-the-art operating rooms will be put into service in the spring.

A community open house is also being planned for Saturday, January 11 – one week before the wing opens to patients.
