SkyJack employees in Guelph evacuated after transformer explosion

By Ben Eppel

SkyJack employees in Guelph have been evacuated to the Welcome Centre of their manufacturing plant after a transformer across the street caught fire.

An employee at SkyJack tells 570 NEWS, at one point employees smelled smoke.

“On Woodlawn Road — there's a police officer and somebody from hydro, it looks like — apparently there was a transformer on fire, and it's caused our lights to either flicker like crazy or completely go out.”

She says hundreds of people are being held in the Welcome Centre until further notice, and that power is out except for emergency lighting.

“We just have to stay here until the all-clear is given,” she says. “We can't get our coats or anything.”

Guelph Police have confirmed to 570 NEWS that a transformer across from the plant did explode, and the situation is ongoing.
