When the Kitchener Rangers skate to be Canadian champions in Kelowna, B.C., their fans will be able to cheer them on from the Aud here at home.
The City of Kitchener has announced a watch party for Sunday for the final of the Memorial Cup.
“There’s definitely a buzz in the air. We felt it right from the beginning of the playoffs here in the building,” beamed Allyson Samms, Manager, The Aud. “It’s been really fun,” She added.
The watch party will be free with voluntary cash or food donations to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region accepted at the doors.
Puck drop for the final is still set for 7:00 p.m. Kitchener time, but the city says that is “subject to timing adjustments from the CHL.”
Fans can expect to see much of the same things they’d see if the game was in town, said Samms, “the concessions will be open. We got confirmation from Tex that he doesn’t want to miss it, so he’ll be here. And you will be able to grab a drink, grab some popcorn and grab a seat here at the Aud.”
The watch party will have a DJ, and Rangers swag giveaways, they were really hoping to create a “gameday atmosphere.”
Samms said fans may want to get to the Aud early to get the best seats.
“We will be opening our doors an hour prior to puck drop for the finals game on Sunday. So, free admission. We’ll welcome the fans in. It’s general admission in the main bowl and we’re looking to light the building up and bring the energy back home to the Aud for the final game.”
Kitchener mayor Berry Vrbanovic said in a statement, “Let’s pack The Aud, wear our blue and bring all the energy we can muster as we rally behind our team on hockey’s biggest stage.”
He added, “I want to congratulate the Kitchener Rangers on an incredible run in this national tournament on the road to the Memorial Cup Final on Sunday. This team has made our city proud with their dedication, skill and resilience.”
The Rangers are undefeated at the Memorial Cup, and won their way directly into the final after beating Chicoutimi on Tuesday night.
The Kitchener Rangers will play either the Everett Silvertips or the Chicoutimi Saguenéens on Sunday.
Everett and Chicoutimi meet in the Memorial Cup Semi-Final, Friday night.
