Blowing snow and squalls impact Waterloo Region, wind chills approach -30

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

There were multiple weather alerts in place from Environment Canada for Tuesday as Waterloo Region was hit with arctic-like winds and blowing snow.

Yellow advisories for cold and blowing snow were in place for the morning as wind chill values approached -30.

“It’s a pretty blustery day out there with those south-westerly winds around 20 to 40 km/h, gusts up to about 50 km/h,” said 570’s Meteorologist Carl Lam.

The cold warning was lifted early in the afternoon.

A yellow watch for snow squalls was added by Environment Canada after 10:30 a.m., warning of periods of brief but intense snowfall. It was upgraded to a yellow warning shortly after 3 p.m. as an additional 2 to 5 cm was anticipated.

Road surfaces remain snow and ice-covered around Waterloo Region and beyond, leading to a warning from Ontario Provincial Police.

“Drive to the road conditions, not the posted limits,” said OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk. “Yesterday we had several crashes of people driving on what they believed to be clear roads, which were all ice covered.”

Light flurries remain in the forecast for Waterloo Region for the remainder of the week.
