As we swelter through the second week of June, a look back on the weather that was this past May.
The E.D. Soulis Memorial Weather Station at the University of Waterloo is out with its monthly weather recap and last month, was chilly.
In fact, the first half of the month made it the coolest May since 2020.
“The temperature last went below zero on May 12, which is about 5 days later than the average date in the history of the Soulis memorial weather station,” read the report.
The coldest it dropped to was -1.5 C, compared to a high of 29.1 C. The overall monthly temperature was more than a degree below average, measuring at 17.7 C (compared to 19.2 C).
Precipitation-wise, there wasn’t much rain last month, with a total of 55.2 mm of rainfall, the majority of which fell on one day.
Saturday, May 23, saw 25.6 mm of rain. Overall, that is much lower than what May usually sees, which is closer to 73 mm.
Storm activity, however, did hit our western neighbours. Two tornadoes and a downburst led to significant damage in the London area on May 19.
Many in the Waterloo Region received tornado alerts on their devices that evening.
