Charges laid following assault, hate-motivated incident in Kitchener

A Kitchener man is facing charges of assault and forcible confinement following a hate-motivated incident on Sunday morning.

It was around 6:30 a.m. when police were called out to a restaurant in the Ottawa Street South and Alpine Road area of Kitchener for reports of an unwanted man.

When they arrived on scene, officers found a male victim who had been assaulted inside the restaurant. An investigation also found that the suspect had caused property damage to a vehicle in the parking lot.

Police said that the same suspect later attended another restaurant, where he broke items, uttered threats toward staff and forcibly confined them inside the establishment.

That suspect was arrested after a “brief interaction” with police, and has since been identified as a 39-year-old Kitchener man.

Investigators believe the incident to be hate related. The accused now faces several charges, including:

  • Assault
  • Mischief under $5,000 (two counts)
  • Uttering threats to cause death of bodily harm (three counts)
  • Assault (additional count)
  • Forcible confinement

The accused was held in police custody for a bail hearing.
