Driver crashes into downed tree after going around road closed sign following storm

A reminder from emergency officials to follow all road closure signs and to not drive on closed roads – especially following a major storm.

Police in Stratford have charged a driver for going on a closed roadway the morning after the massive Sept. 2 storm. That driver reportedly crashed into a downed tree while on the closed portion of Perth Road 113 around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

“It was learned that the driver had driven around the road closure sign at Line 26, after which the driver collided with a tree that had fallen across the roadway,” said police.

“We ask everyone to be patient while crews continue to work hard to clean all roadways in our area to ensure that safe travel can occur once again.”

That closure, still in place Friday, was on Perth Road 113 between Line 20 and Line 26.

That portion of the roadway is about 10 minutes outside of Tavistock, where a damage survey team from the Northern Tornadoes Project has confirmed evidence of a tornado during the Sept. 2 storm.

Police said the windshield of the vehicle was smashed and the air bags were deployed.

Fortunately the driver was not hurt. They have since been charged.
