Waterloo tying its laces, preparing for annual Terry Fox Run

By Justin Koehler

This year marks the 45th anniversary of one of Canada’s most impactful events, remembering Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, with Waterloo and other cities across the country now getting set for the annual Terry Fox Run.

The event in Waterloo is being held in Waterloo Park, near Central St. and Albert St., on Sunday, Sept. 14.

Back on April 12, 1980, Terry Fox kicked off his Marathon of Hope, looking to run across the country to raise money and awareness towards cancer research.

His goal was to run across Canada, east to west, kicking off his run by dipping his artificial leg into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

He made his way through Waterloo Region during his marathon, running across the streets of Kitchener on July 21, 1980.

Fox’s marathon was, unfortunately, cut short, as the athlete needed to be taken to hospital on Sept. 1 after making it as far as Thunder Bay after his cancer spread to his legs. He died nine months later on June 28, 1981.

His legacy continues to trek on, with the Terry Fox Run making its way to areas across the country every single year. Waterloo is hoping to continue the pride-filled event, looking to celebrate its 45th anniversary.

The city has stated that, for 2025, it’s hoping to raise $53,800 in support of cancer research. As of now, it is already less than $3,000 away from that goal, having raised $51,136 before the event has even kicked off.

Since it first got rolling, Terry Fox Runs across Canada have raised nearly $1 billion, helping to support over 1,300 innovative cancer research projects in that time.

Registration for the Waterloo Terry Fox Run kicks off at 8:45 a.m., with runners, cyclists, walkers, and more looking to get the trek rolling at 10:00 a.m.

More information on the Terry Fox Run and where to donate can be found on the fundraiser’s website.
