The Chair of the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) has stepped down.
The WCDSB announced the details in a notice that was posted online Wednesday afternoon.
“We wish to inform you that Robert Sikora has stepped down from his role as Chair of the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, effective immediately,” the statement read.
No reason was provided for his departure from the role.
Sikora is set to continue serving as a WCDSB Trustee and Linda Cuff, the WCDSB’s Vice-Chair, will serve as Acting Chair in the interim. A new Catholic school board Chair is set to be elected at a special WCDSB meeting, set to be held April 14.
The notice ended with, “We thank Mr. Sikora for his service and leadership.”
It was signed by Cuff and the WCDSB’s Director of Education, Tyrone Dowling.
Pride flag backlash continues
This comes amid controversy over banning certain flags from school property in the region.
The WCDSB is continuing to mull over its upcoming motion that could ban Pride flags across its schools.
The motion about the flags argues that only the Ontario and Canadian flags should be allowed on flag poles, or to be seen inside schools, because those flags represent everyone.
It’s been met with pushback since the news broke of the potential ban, with hundreds flocking to the board’s education office ahead of the initial Monday meeting.
The final decision is not expected to be given until later next month, being pushed back to April 29.
