Speaking to any of the charitable organizations in Waterloo Region, one of the first things they will tell you is just how generous this community can be.
Regardless of the cause, people are quick to open their hearts and their pocketbooks to help those in need. The Salvation Army Kitchener’s Christmas Campaign is another prime example of that generosity.
In a email, the Sally Ann shared that it had set a goal of $210,000 for the 2024 campaign. They were able to raise $265,077 which helped provide toys for over 5,000 kids on Christmas morning as well as food hampers and clothing to families in need.
Captain Kelly Fifield, Corps Officer and Executive Director of the Salvation Army Kitchener Community Church and Family Care Centre told 570 NewsRadio surpassing the goal simply means they can help more people.
“When we see an increase and we see our goal being met, it is so exciting for us because it allows us that opportunity to dream and to see where those gaps are in our community and to figure out where it is we can step in and continue to support and serve Waterloo Region.”
The Christmas Campaign is the Salvation Army’s largest and most important fundraiser of the year. The money raised helps fund outreach and community programs throughout the year.
Fifield said as they look to the year ahead, she has just one thing to say:
“Thank you. Thank you to the community, the individuals and businesses that stepped-up to support us. Whether that be financially or giving of their time or running a toy drive for us. Every hour that somebody gave in volunteer time. Or, every dollar dropped in our kettles or every toy that came in through a toy drive just makes such an impact.”
