The City of Waterloo is getting a head start on its snow clearing program.
The Assisted Snow Clearing Program is free for those who are unable to clear their sidewalks and windrows from snow plows during the winter. It begins right after the first snowfall or on Nov. 1 to April 30, 2025.
It is open for those who are 65 and older, as well as individuals with physical disabilities, who meet an income requirement. Anyone who received the service last season does not need to reapply and will be contacted by city staff to confirm service for this year.
“The city’s assisted snow-clearing programs will address common winter sidewalk difficulties and support accessibility concerns for residential private properties,” said Tiffany Smith, manager of community programs for the City of Waterloo.
“Often the people most in need of clear sidewalks for winter mobility are also those who may experience challenges keeping a sidewalk clear. We are prioritizing mobility needs and community supports with our program.”
The city noted that anyone who does not meet the requirement can still apply for a fee-for-service option where the city matches them with a “self-employed snow worker.”
The program is funded by the government of Canada’s Age Well at Home Initiative, Ontario Health and the City of Waterloo.
Applications are open until Sept. 30.
