The noise from train whistles is keeping residents in St. Jacobs up at night, and Woolwich Township council may look to ease those concerns.
Woolwich Councillor Eric Schwindt is brining a motion to a meeting on Tuesday that would look to direct staff to work with organizations that use the train crossing at King Street North in the south end of St. Jacobs in order to implement improved safety features.
Any potential upgrades and their associated costs would come back before council before final approvals.
“This is not simply a noise issue. It is also a safety and livability issue in a growing community,” said Kyle Huff, a St. Jacobs resident in messaging to council ahead of the meeting.
Residents note that the whistle of passing trains can be heard throughout surrounding neighbouroods, and point to the fact that residential development in that area will also be impacted if a solution isn’t found.
“While the whistle is intended as a safety measure, the current setup can also create a stressful and inconsistent environment for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and nearby residents,” added Huff.
If approved by council, staff would be directed to find a solution before the end of 2026.
