Non-criminal charge for crash that killed two people from Drayton

A charge has been laid for a deadly crash last fall that left two people from Drayton dead, but it’s not a criminal charge.

Wellington OPP said a 43-year-old from Drayton has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with “improper lights on farm vehicle.”

It was back on the night of Oct. 2, 2025, when officers responded to the scene of the collision on Eighth Line in Mapleton.

Police said a pick-up truck and a tractor collided.

A 32-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, both from Drayton, were pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the man was driving was driving the pick-up.

The driver of the tractor suffered only minor injuries.

Police announced Monday the tractor driver is facing one count under the Highway Traffic Act, and will be dealt with in provincial offences court in Guelph.

In a statement to 570 NewsRadio, the OPP said:

“Investigations of this nature are complex and involve the careful consideration of several contributing factors. The evidence gathered during the investigation supported the charge that was laid. The tractor driver’s actions in this collision did not meet the threshold for a criminal driving charge. The matter is now before the courts, so it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
