A busy roundabout in Waterloo is going to get more businesses and traffic around it following a vote at city council.
Councillors voted yes, Monday evening, to allow additional development at the plaza on the southwest corner of Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard.
A statement from city hall says the changes “will enable the site to expand beyond the existing commercial plaza to include a new commercial block, new municipal road, new multi-use path and relocated/new stormwater management facility.”
The plan comes from Waterloo Commons JV Inc. to expand the existing plaza, create a new municipal road connecting to Erb by a new roundabout, and establish a new stormwater management facility.
The new commercial building area will have roughly 4,900 square metres of commercial space, two-thirds of which is proposed to be devoted to a food store.
The plan required changes to the city’s official plan, with some zoning amendments.
Last year, the roundabout at Erb and Ira Needles underwent reconstruction to include new pedestrian safety features.
