Kitchener’s Toys ‘R’ Us location getting ready to close its doors

By Justin Koehler

The Toys “R” Us location in Kitchener on Fairway Road is getting ready to close its doors, marking the end of the toy retailer across Waterloo Region.

Posters on the front windows of the location say “This store is closing,” now kicking off liquidation sales on some of its products ahead of its impending closure.

The store has been located in Kitchener’s south-east end for 40 years.

It comes amidst continued closures across the country for Toys “R” Us, with previous reports showing that 38 locations had closed across Canada in 2025.

As of now, Toys “R” Us is showing 40 locations on its website, but many, including the Kitchener location, are up for sale.

The toy retailer has seen declining foot traffic and revenue as Canadians have begun shifting to online options, depending more on larger brands such as Amazon or Walmart, or reducing spending altogether.

The closing signs outside the Kitchener location come just days after the location in Guelph’s Stone Road Mall was forced to shutter its doors, with signs saying it was due to “nonpayment of rent.”

The company itself is facing seven different lawsuits from landlords, seeking upwards of $31.3 million in unpaid rent and other damages.

The location in Kitchener has been up for sale since August 2025, but at the time, no details were made regarding the future of the store.

No official date is known for when Kitchener’s Toys “R” Us is set to close.
