‘End of an era’: Waterloo shoppers say goodbye to Hudson’s Bay

By Mark Douglas & Justin Koehler

“I kind of expected it, but I didn’t want to believe.” That’s just one comment from a Waterloo Region shopper, getting ready to say goodbye to The Hudson’s Bay.

All three The Bay locations in the region, and all stores across the country, are set to close permanently on Sunday.

570 NewsRadio spoke with shoppers outside The Bay at Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener.

One shopper said, “I remember getting stuff from there when I was younger, it’s been a staple for getting Christmas gifts…It’s the end of an era, we’ll say.”

Another shopper remembers Hudson’s Bay as a great place to get wedding gifts.

“It’s a legacy of Canada, that’s just now up and gone.”

Shoppers, though, said they’re not necessarily surprised the stores are closing, given the rise of online shopping.

There are Bay stores in Conestoga Mall in Waterloo, Fairview Park in Kitchener, and at the Cambridge Centre.
