A special weather statement, which called for as much as 8 cm of snow, has now concluded across Waterloo Region after leading to harsh travel conditions and a messy morning commute.
On Monday night, a winter clipper began making its way across the region, expected to have brought 4-8 cm of snow throughout the night and into the morning.
“There is a risk of freezing rain or ice pellets overnight and on Tuesday morning,” said 570’s Meteorologist Allister Aalders. “As the snow tapers off, we could see some mixing with rain or freezing rain.”
The snowfall has led to various slowdowns, collisions, and dangerous road conditions through the course of Tuesday morning, all as those snow plows begin making their way throughout the region and across Highway 401.
Upcoming weather through Christmas Day
Aalders said, though, that once that clipper makes its way through the region into Tuesday morning, it should take a milder shift pushing through the remainder of the week.
“Some quiet weather for the remainder of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, so if you are travelling in the lead up to Christmas, it’s looking relatively fair and Christmas Day itself will be fine.”
When looking more at the thermometer, the trend of mixed weather this week continues, with Aalders saying it should jump in both directions before the week comes to a close.
“There will be fluctuations in temperatures this week, although no major extremes. The normal high for this time of year is -2C,” Aalders said. “We’ll see 2C on Tuesday, then -1C on Wednesday, 1C on Thursday, so we’re alternating between both sides of the freezing mark.”
It all adds up to a potential coin flip when it comes to the chances of a green or white Christmas here in 2025.
