Guelph police arrest two men for impaired driving hours apart

It was a busy three days for police in the royal city over the weekend.

Guelph Police say they received 582 calls for service in 72 hours, including 23 collisions and 11 driving complaints. In two separate cases, police laid impaired driving charges.

In the first incident, officers responded to a two-vehicle collision on Dec. 21 around 8:31 p.m. near the intersection of Speedvale Avenue West and Elmira Road North.

They determined that the driver, a 57-year-old man from Guelph, tried to go around a stopped car and collided with another vehicle that was trying to back into a driveway. The driver fled the scene. Police found him at a local residence around 8:59 p.m. and placed him under arrest.

He faces numerous charges including:

  • Impaired operation of a conveyance
  • Operation of a Conveyance – 80 plus
  • Dangerous operation
  • Fail to stop after accident

Then several hours later, around 12:44 a.m. on Dec. 22, officers responded to a report of a possible impaired driver travelling eastbound on Woodlawn Road West near the Silvercreek Parkway North intersection.

Officers found the suspected vehicle in a parking lot after it went through a restaurant drive-thru. After conducting a traffic stop, they found the driver was impaired and proceeded to arrest him.

A 41-year-old man from Guelph faces charges including:

  • Impaired operation of a conveyance
  • Operation of a conveyance – 80 plus
