GRCA issues water safety message with late December rainfall

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is out with a warning for local waterways and reservoirs after a weather system brought down a fair amount of rain to southwestern Ontario.

The GRCA says that local lakes and rivers will see an higher river flows after that system brought down between 10-15mm of rain between Thursday night and Friday morning.

“No significant flooding is expected with this event; however, river flows in local waterways will be higher than normal for this time of year, increasing the risk in low-lying areas typically prone to flooding,” said the statement.

The service is warning of the dangers around reservoirs as well. Normally, they see reduced levels of water flow during this time of the year, but the elevated water levels can make it more dangerous, especially with fluctuating temperatures and thin ice.

Parents and pet owners are advised to keep their children and small animals away from shorelines and waterways, noting the higher water levels and fast moving currents.

“Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Recreational users near local waterways should be aware of the current conditions and exercise additional caution,” said the statement.

Their message is expected to stay in place until 12 p.m. (noon) on Saturday December 20.
